Vitamins for Acne

Vitamins for acneThere are many supplements on the market that are able to improve or even get rid of acne. An acne condition can be caused by a lack of essential nutrients for healthy skin. Also, since acne is usually an inflammatory condition, it can definitely be improved by taking supplements that have anti-inflammatory properties. Since modern diets usually lack in many essential vitamins and minerals, it is wise to look into supplementation. However, acne can be caused by many different factors, so a complete diet and lifestyle change may be necessary in some cases.

Vitamins and minerals, although essential for our body, are best absorbed when they come from natural sources. Since eating foods that are nutrient rich may not always be possible, then synthetic supplements are the solution. Some supplements can come from natural sources, but most vitamins are produced in laboratories.

Synthetic supplements are less bio-available than the natural or colloidal ones. Also, some of them can alter the absorption rate of other important nutrients. People that have any liver problems, kidney disorders, or other severe illnesses should always check with their doctor before taking any supplements.

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is regarded as an alternative to Accutane when taken in high doses. This vitamin can reduce or eliminate acne completely in some cases. It is beneficial for those that suffer from extreme oiliness that causes acne breakouts.

Vitamin B5 has the ability to reduce sebum production by increasing the body’s ability to metabolize fats. Those that suspect a vitamin B5 deficiency can benefit from supplementing.

Vitamin B5 can also be absorbed from natural sources, such as eggs, meat, or broccoli.

The recommended dose is usually between 1mg and 3mg of Vitamin B5. Make sure that you are aware of all the possible side-effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, hair loss, other vitamin deficiencies etc.

Vitamins for acne - Zinc supplementZinc for acne

There are many positive reports of people that have been able to treat acne by supplementing with zinc. There are many acne creams and toners that contain it, and that can improve your skin condition.

Zinc is basically an essential mineral for our skin’s health. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce acne breakouts, and it is also essential for skin tissue formation.

Zinc can be taken in doses of up to 100 mg per day, since higher doses can be toxic. Getting zinc from natural sources is not hard at all. The foods that contain the highest amount of zinc include: oysters, liver, beef, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, chocolate, lobster, crab, or almonds.

Vitamins for acne - MSM powderMSM for acne

MSM, or methyl sulfonyl methane, is a sulfur compound that can be found as a supplement. Some people have reported an improved skin condition as a result of taking MSM. Sulfur is an important element for skin and hair formation, and it also has antibacterial properties. While MSM is not the same as ingesting sulfur, it does appear to provide a steady amount of this element when ingested in supplement form. It is known that MSM can make the skin tissue softer, and it is also very good for stimulating hair growth.

If you have acne, you can try taking between 500-1000 mg of MSM per day along with some vitamin C(1000-2000 mg). Within two weeks you should be able to see some improvement. Some people do report side-effects of taking MSM, such as fatigue or lack of energy. Natural MSM can be found in fresh fruits and vegetable, except frozen ones.

Vitamins for acne - Omega 3Omega 3 fatty acids for acne

Supplementing with Omega 3 has dramatic positive results for most acne sufferers. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that can reduce acne lesions and overall inflammation. Our modern diets have an improper Omega 6/Omega 3 ration. In some cases, Omega 3 acids are almost absent from our daily meals because not many foods contain them. A good supplement of Omega 3, such as cod liver oil or salmon oil, can help you get rid of acne naturally and balance hormones. Look for a supplement that has at least 600mg of DHA. Since this is a natural supplement, there are basically no risk of long term supplementation. You can also get Omega 3 from fish, seafood, grape seed oil, walnuts, or sesame seeds.

When you are trying to fight acne using supplements, it is important to monitor your progress. If there is no improvement after a month on a certain supplement, it is better to discontinue taking it.

Also, dietary changes can also be very important when fighting acne. Cut down on sugar, refined flour, grains, and other inflammatory foods that can trigger acne.
